You could ask a girl for directions, because you only want directions. You have trouble asking a girl out because you want her. So stop projecting your desires onto her, you're screwing up because you look at her and you see yourself in bed with her and then you are envisioning your whole future. That fantasy is making it impossible for you to even see the woman right in front of you, as she really is.

So relax and take the pressure off yourself. Lighten up.

Then approach the girl without the intention of trying to charm her or anything like that. You'd want her to be charmed by how you naturally are, not by how you're acting when you're trying to make her like you. Just walk up to her and have a conversation with her. Focus on finding out what kind of person she is and if you like her. You could do everything right and she'd end up liking you, but if it turns out you don't actually find her interesting or appealing at all, you're now left with a girl you have to turn down because you don't like her, when you're the one who approached her in the first place.

Stress less on what happens as a result of the interaction and instead focus on enjoying the conversation. If you're having fun with it, and you end up thinking she's cool to interact with, then at that point you can ask for her number or whatnot.
