Can't get past the opener

I think the best piece of advice for moments when you're stumped is to go with

Something in the area such as a person in the vicinity who just walked by doing something odd, or someone who just dropped a plot of food or spilled a drink
Where you are such as if you're at a library ask what she's reading or looking for and move forward from there
Something about her such as why she's at where she's at if it's a weird location, where her friends are if she's alone, and any number of other silly little questions to get her talking

You can literally talk about anything, those are just general ideas, or can hopefully make you think of other things. Something you even noticed about her clothes could be used, just be creative and look around if you don't know what to say

I know what you mean, after all, logically, there is no reason for you two to be talking to one another at that place at that time. Except of course that you must be interested in her or you wouldn't feel the urge to talk to her. I saw an interesting set of questions posted here recently; if you draw a complete blank on the stuff DailyManiliness suggested you could memorize a few of those questions and just pull one out of your ass when you start drawing blanks. Something like "I don't think I've seen you here before" ... "so, if you were famous, what would you want to be famous for?". You could then role play with whatever she says, share a thought about anything related to famous people, or maybe explore the field she says she'd want to be famous in. Practice "jump off points" as described in Mark Manson's "Models" and conversation will get easier.

Remember the common advice around here: don't necessarily focus on trying to make her attracted to you, focus on having a conversation that entertains you, weather it be exploring her personality and relating experiences or creating opportunities to make funny quips. Get creative with that shit, the better you express yourself the better conversationalist you'll be (as long as you've been making yourself at least a somewhat interesting person).

What opener do you use? Depending on the first things you say, the conversation can be shut down quickly. "Hey what's up?" "Not much" I always look at it like a girl gets hit on every time she goes out so to ask what's up, she may instantly give you a generic response and those are kinda hard to deal with. I like indirect a little better. It's nice to be able to shoot over a generic statement and if she wants to respond kindly then she's probably worth talking to, but if she blows it off you might as well move on. At no point did your comment mean you had interest in her. I really like opening in a way that I was never even expecting anything past a quick conversation to see if you're worth my time. If the girl is, then continue talking to her and show a little more interest/intent.

I usually compliment her on her clothes if she is wearing something interesting.

Other times I just ask if she's Japanese, tell her that I'm studying and if we can have a short conversation.

The second one doesn't help you much but these are relevant to my life and goals. What relevant to yours?
