Something I picked up on in analyzing my own responses to opportunities led me to find a helpful way to greatly increase my success and overcome my shyness.

One day I was in a mall food court and I spotted a cute girl my age. I sat down at a table about 20 feet from her and waited from my friend. I looked up to take a visual sweep around when she happened to look up also and we locked eyes. I didn't hold it for more than a second and kept on scanning the room. Wondering if it was a coincidence I took another glance at her and she was very obviously looking right into my eyes. Young self conscious me panicked and quickly looked down. "It had to be a mistake right?" , so I look again and she was looking away but noticed me and again locked eyes. What did I do? Of course, I panicked again and did nothing.

Afterwards I kicked myself for not seeing the obvious opportunity I had. Where did I go wrong? So I came up with a plan.

It's been quite a few years since then. The other day I was in a very nice suit and tie outfit looking very fresh and I felt good about it. I was in a supermarket checking out when I noticed a cute cashier that I've seen working there before. She turned at met eyes with me and I acted like I was looking passed her, continuing my scan of the area behind her. Then after a few seconds I did another sweep noticing her looking at me. I looked down calmly and then up again directly into her eyes and smiled. She got slightly flustered and smiled back. We held a 3 or 4 second gaze and I wrote down my number and handed it to the cashier telling her it's for the girl on the other register over there when she isn't busy. The elderly lady looked back at laughed agreeing.

Before you go out into public, and especially if you are looking good all dressed up or feeling confident, mentally prepare yourself for these opportunities that can happen. Be prepared for a possible eye lock, remember to hold it 2-3 seconds and give a slight inviting smile. If they reciprocate be ready to make your move. By doing this you will find more success in the field and soon you won't have to think about it because it will be natural.
