If I want to be set up by a friend I'll directly ask them to set me up, and generally my friends will ask the same of me if they want to do so. Your friends should (if they're good friends) be looking to help you in situations like this so beating around the bush isn't necessary, at least from my experiences.

For me it never works. I usually ask a friend whats up with some (whether theyre single). I wait a few days hoping theyll bring it up to them and then ill try to introduce myself.

Just ask him. I had a buddy set me up with a co-worker girl, it worked out, I'm dating her now.

I wouldn't directly ask them to set you up, but maybe suggest going to bars/other social settings with coworker's friends. From there, you can make small talk and see what's up.
