Don't try too hard - Sometimes people are threatened by a newcomer so just ease your way in, and sit near people like you're open to conversation and I'm sure they will invite you in. It's better to be invited than to throw yourself in between people in situations like this. Also, you know you'll be at future events so you don't have to be a social conqueror on your first day.
Make a first impression - Don't be too shy. Don't be afraid to ask personal questions. Show that you want to be "in." Crack a joke, and crack a smile here and there once they've invited you in.

Surfers are notoriously territorial and unfriendly to noobs out on "their' beaches. I believe the term "noob" actually originated from surf lingo. If you have leaders who are actually welcoming to noobs, just go for it. The situation is set up to help you become part of the group. Go get into the group.
