Yes. Because if she says yes, then you know she's interested in you. Better to be be denied a date than hangout as just friends if you want someone more.

I don't, because i feel it makes everything more causal and less "courtship" (more lover less provider, I'm only looking for plates). But my friend who's looking for a gf does. He specifically says the word "date", and girls are usually surprised and they tend to like it.

It depends on the girl, it depends on the context. You could circumvent this confusion by asking them to do something specific.
