Stop worrying about girls and fix yourself. You are distracting yourself with crushes in order to not face your real issues whatever they may be. Sounds like lack of experience and confidence based on your post. Can't fix experience directly so work on the latter then the experience will come.

Your issue is that you're putting yourself in the friendzone then wondering why women keep you in the friendzone.

First off, she hasn't seen you in five years. You can approach her as if you're a new man. She's not holding that five years against you. You also have a perfect excuse for getting to know her. Uhh--we knew each other five years ago and lost touch--let's catch up. EASY.

But look man it's all in how you behave with women and how you approached them. If you approached and behaved like a friend/friendly person, you DISQUALIFIED yourself. You said--I'd rather not get rejected so I won't apply. Kind of like not applying to a college because you figured you're not good enough, but keeping a correspondence anyway. IF you approach/behave like a man who wants to sleep with her--you may get rejected but you won't have this ambiguity of why women you approach like friends don't want to sleep with you.

Like others have said you need to improve yourself. You're 21, you're young as fuck so you'll have plenty of time to get there. You need to "learn the game", get confidence, be happy with yourself (feeling stupid and depressed gotta go).

Tips... Read, watch videos, learn. Do stuff that's new. Challenge yourself. Surround yourself with people that lift you up. Seek others that are the way you would like to be. It's all part of growing up.

And know that this is advice from a 37yo that feels stupid and depressed most of the time, so I definitely not the best guy for answer right now. But I was once at a point in my life where I could go for any chick in my past and have things happen because my self-confidence was sky-high. And if not, well, definitely her loss.

Damn it now I'm like you. Sigh. But the point is, I was like you and I know you can get much much better.

Also may I say it's not stupid to have a crush. It's the most honest thing in the world. You should smile and be happy, a crush can be the cutest thing. You're not ready for it, but you shouldn't be ashamed of it. Embrace it. Smile about how different it makes you feel. Someday you'll have the right mindset and confidence to get the girl.
