Following a girl on Instagram or Facebook is great IF you ask them for it in person. If you wimp out and don't close, and then search a girl and find her later on social media, it looks pretty weak. Then again if you're probably never going to run into the girl again in real life, there's not really anything to lose.

You can close with a Facebook or Instagram in place of a phone number and sometimes it even works better than a phone number. A phone number close feels like a stronger close (and I usually go for it first), but it also makes it really easy for the girl to forget who you are. FB or IG, however, will constantly remind her that you exist and will show both how you look and convey your personality to some extent. Much better for keeping the attraction alive than a phone number. The other important detail is that you need to have an attractive portrayal of yourself on your FB or IG page. Mostly that means two things: 1) Pictures that show attractive qualities 2) Social proof Also with FB in particular you need to consider what you post as statuses. If you're complaining all the time, for example, that's not demonstrating value.

Time horizon is also an important consideration. I've had very little success resuscitating a phone number where I was unable to get the girl on a date within a week of getting the number. I've had considerably more success, however, resuscitating leads that resulted in a FB or IG close. If you know you won't be able to see the girl within a few days, definitely go for the FB or IG instead of or in addition to the number.

Asking for a number is always better. Imo linking on social media is not a good idea as you'll know more about them which is not always good as then there is nothing to talk to about in person there, it is also possible that you may find something common to connect over but if things head south you know more about them and that could fuck you up as you are likely to get attached to them due to the 'spotlight effect' that stalking on them has. And also it becomes to forget them in that case as they always keep popping up on your feed.
