Right. Here's the thing. If you're learning an instrument just to get girls, that's a recipe for failure. It's a trap that many college freshmen get into from what I see, and what you should be doing instead is actually explore instruments that YOU are legitimately interested in. This is actually a difficult task because sexual thoughts permeate a guy's thoughts constantly, so be sure to think carefully before you choose one.

In terms of network building, again, go find hobbies that you are legitimately interested in that has a decent amount of girls. It doesn't have to be taking photographs of models but it certainly does help. Just go somewhere where there is an ample supply of viable girls (So engineering stuff is out of the question here). Think of hobbies as your substitute goods - it should fill your time and emotions out of thinking about girls.

Keep in mind that no instrument will boost your smv if the latter is below a certain threshold.

Being in a band that is successful even only on a local level is a different story. But then it's not about the instrument, but preselection.

Networking... Yes, being in a band is helpful in networking. You will meet people. But being in a band can be very time/energy consuming. It's also expensive. You'll also meet a lot of annoying people.
