Taking a contrarian view, breast self-examination is way overrated as a means to detect cancer. Mammograms or MRI screenings (the latter too expensive and slow for routine currently) are much superior. By the time a woman or doctor can feel the mass, it should and could have been detected earlier.

A similar situation obtains for prostate cancer. Routine digital rectal exams are being discarded for better screening tests, like PSA and MRI, but again, the latter test is too slow and expensive for routine. However, the DRE is next to worthless and the screening protocol organizations have recommended abandoning it, thank goodness.

As for testicular cancer, self-examination is probably how most are discovered, and it's rare enough that other screening tests are probably low cost-benefit, unless a screening test could be made very cheap and very positive predictive value.

Male here. I had a breast cancer scare and a mammogram once. Turned out to be a fatty deposit that materialized in my chest.
