Need your help and insights learning/improving/understanding the complex world of women.

So yesterday i grew a slightly bigger pair of balls and asked a girl out the first time in my life(yeah sad music.. coz i am 30, but i look no more than 27-28). The girl in context works at the grocery store nearby. She is young and cute, we talked a couple of times before and i seen her checking me out once or twice before, but nothing went further than 'hi, how r you, what are you upto' etc except yesterday, when i saw here and she came over to help with identification at self checkout (for beer), i just straightforward asked (the conversation follows, she was a little shy during the first half and smiling for the whole conversation, sometimes even leaning in, she didn't leave or rushed to cut of conversation, even after saying no) . I didnt fidget, was not babbling, was maintaining eye contact as much as i can ( since i was billing my groceries at the same time ) and was smiling the whole time. 

M: 'Hi. How are you?' H: 'M good. How are you?' M: 'Good too. Listen what are you upto this weekend ?' H: 'I dont know. Maybe working' M: 'The whole weekend?' H: 'Yeah maybe not sure yet' M: 'So when are you free ?' H: she look curious ... and in smiling tone went 'mmmm ... Why are you asking ?' M: 'There is this movie i really wanna see?' H: 'ahh ..I am so sorry. I have a boyfriend' M: trying to hold the frame ...'Its alright. Tell him I am your gay friend' H: 'Oh. Are you gay?' M: 'Oh no no... ' she started smiling more H: (She pointed to the old lady at the other counter) 'why dont you ask her out ?' M: (I Looked at her) 'Her ? ..I would , but she looks nothing like you'  (she started smiling more) H: 'You should, she might say yes. She looks more your age.' M: 'Oh god. Do you think i look that old ? How old are you?' H: 'I am 21.'  M: 'That's not too young. How old do you think I am ?' H: '30, mmmm ... 28.' M: 'I am 30'.... (continued to groceries)... turned around...  'So how about just coffee sometime ?' H: 'shaking head (No)'. M: 'Oh you are killing me' ... (paused to pick up polythene bag for groceries) ....'Okay how about this , lets         exchange numbers, i will send you a text, if you change your mind, just message and let me know'.  H: (In shy tone)...No I am not that kind of girl. M: (curious) 'That kind of girl ?' H: 'If I have a boyfriend, i will not take number from another man.'  M: 'Are you sure ?' H: noding (yes) ... In the meantime the old lady called... she said bye and left to attend her.

Now I have a couple of questions ? 1. I didnt understand the pointing to old lady ? Was this a shit test ? Or my age really bothered her? 2. The whole boyfriend topic. How to tell if she is telling the truth or just testing to see how persistent I am. 3. Any other critique/suggestion you might have. Any changes in frame i needed to have. 4. Should i really be assuming 21yrs olds are now beyond me ? 5. Should i try asking her out again ? like in playful manner...

I also understand that i may be bloating things too much in my head.

Please understand i am very new to approaching women, so i am trying to understand anything i am overlooking.
