What is the symbolism of women drinking wine alone? I see this in a lot of TV shows and now a lot of reddit single-women Christmas cards.

Carousel rider, likely approaching wall or post-wall, wondering why she can't find an 8+ man with a penis that ejaculates money who will commit and provide.

But why not whiskey, liqueur or beer? Why is it wine?

When somebody asks her what she did last night, a glass of wine is an easier explanation than, "I had too much to drink, vibrator, The Notebook, and passed out on the couch."

Yeah this is what's always weird to me. In TV shows the camera will almost always make sure you notice a big ol' glass of wine, and it's always a fancy proper glass too. I feel like I'm missing some deep cultural signal.

I guess because you never fill the whole glass with wine. It's rude or something I guess idk. You only do it if you want to get drunk and/or you don't give a shit about being fancy.

You're supposed to fill the glass up to the point where it's widest so the wine has maximal surface area to breath and you can swirl it a bit and stick your nose in to smell it.

They think it's fancy or they may enjoy the taste. Since living in France I've been drinking a shit ton of it too, it flows like water.

So like a European affectation? Honestly I've started to interpret it as "independent successful woman".

Yeah wine in the U.S. has a status boost associated with it, for people who buy into that sort of thing.

I was a waiter for years and people pat themselves on the back as "classy and sophisticated wine drinkers," trying to impress other people that they know a lot about wine... I'd hear their conversations and they didn't know shit about wine. But as long as they knew more than the other people at their table they felt so proud. lol

The status thing has happened with certain kinds of beer now as well. First it was "microbrews," now it's IPAs, "craft beer," and pontificating about how "hoppy" this or that beer is.
