As I began work on campus as a lab assistant, one particular situation became the clincher.

A mutual friend of my sister's was enrolled in the program that I was lab assistant to. And one day it hit me with a bang. She had an enormous crush on me. Using my former study, and the behavior of the girl herself as examples, I created a directory of Indicators of Interest that may do you some good the next time you are unsure of how a girl feels about you.

  • She smiles often when, or whenever, she looks at you. (The girl in question, we'll call her Jane Doe, can hardly stop smiling whenever we make eye contact.) When your face = a smile from her, you've done something right. If this has happened, lucky you! She associates your presence with good feelings.

  • She dances, sings, hums, or mumbles during silences when you two are alone together. (Jane Doe likes to hum, tap her foot, or quietly talk to herself when we're adjacent to one another in the lab, working on the computers.) If a girl does this, she's feeling that combination of butterflies, happiness, and awkwardness that one feels when they are crushing. There's this tension in the air and you can feel it. It's called sexual tension.

  • She greets you first when you see one another, and with enthusiasm. (The first time Jane saw me in the lab, since we'd met previously, she lit up like Christmas.) A girl who likes you will be happy to see you. Period.

  • She starts up the conversation herself during silences, finding excuses to talk to you when there is not much fodder for discussion. (There were times when I'd be laminating a document or something, and she'd pick up a book and just start talking about it. I was like "wtf is you saying?" but couldn't help feeling flattered at the same time once I realized she just wanted me to talk to her.) When girls like you, they will invest. And when they like hearing you talk, they'll try to get it out of you.

  • She walks up closer to you than she needs to show you something, tell you something, or give you something. (When she showed me the book she'd picked out she approached me with it and got way too close. Less than a foot away.) Girls who like you will find excuses to be in your personal space.

  • She shows signs of confusion, worry, or discomfort when you don't interact with her. (One day I was particularly quiet. Just my mood that day. Jane rolls up with a "are you okay?" and puts her cute face all up in mine, like she was inspecting me to see what's up. Again, very close.) What she does depends on how outgoing she is, but if she is uneasy at your displeasure, again, you've done something right.

  • She accepts, invites, and or initiates touch. (One day, there was a little festival at the college and among other activities they offered temporary tattoos. She'd gotten one. I saw it from a distance and we were talking about it. It was on her forearm below the bend in her elbow. To get a better look, I reached out (GENTLY) for her arm and she actually lifted it and laid it in my hand. I ran my thumb over the tattoo, then looked her in the eye and said "I like it," with a smile. It was a superb moment, sexually charged, and maybe even a little romantic. Additionally, she likes to plaufully shove me, tap me, or jump on my back.) If a girl likes you, she'll let you touch her, even invite it like Jane did.

  • She asks your advice, opinion, or help. Again, they want you involved with them, and they'll make it happen one way or another.

  • She subconsciously gives you bedroom eyes. (I don't think Jane consciously realizes this, but whenever we're talking, I, by habit, practice a particular kind of eye contact that has a twinge of (gentlemanly, not sleazy) desire. She, on the other hand, always looks like she's melting whenever I give her this look.) When a girl gives you "bedroom eyes," her eyes will narrow and sparkle, the edges of her mouth will turn up in a small smirk, and she'll look overall very happy and at ease. If a girl gives you this look, she might as well just out and say "fuck me."

  • She laughs often. Make a joke. See if she laughs. Make a not so good joke. Does she still laugh? Bingo.

  • She laughingly calls you mean, rude, grumpy, etc. (Jane likes to hit back when I neg her by calling me mean, grumpy, or salty.) When girls do this, don't take it to heart. It's just banter. It's a good sign.

  • She stands less than two feet away from you while you talk without backing away. (Throughout all the times we've been standing during conversation, we have rarely been farther than two feet away.) This means a girl feels almost completely comfortable near you. Huge win. Do a little experiment. Make sure you are in an open space where she can back out. Don't be rude or aggressive. You don't want her to feel trapped. Then, during conversation, step in ever so slightly closer, until you are in her personal space. If she stays or steps closer, lucky you. That's good!

  • She smiles, looks up, and makes eye contact while evidently within your personal space. (Jane does this often. She's closer than she has to be, looking me dead in the eyes, and smiling.) If a girl does all this at once, it's a MASSIVE success. That means she feels small, feminine, and safe around you and may actually even be turned on. Take that W!

I hope I have helped someone out.

Namaste.
