The bar/clubs in a big picture are essentially exactly what you said. The reason they’re so popular is because there is an abundance of women.

Are college bars/clubs different, or is that just what all bars and clubs are like?

College bars and clubs will be different, to the extent that college kids have a different mentality, vibe, and sub-culture from graduated students.

I'm in college and I went out to two of the main bars for my school .....

I had fun playing some pool and hanging with a guy that I was there with.....

....most people just kinda stand there with their drink like a dad at a barbecue and put on this tough/cool guy persona.

You've hit on the reality of many of the typical places people go to hang out at, college or beyond. Most of the fun comes from these sources:

Activities that come built into the place, like pool tables, dart boards, dancing on dance floors, etc.
The people you come with.
Or people you know that you bump into.

The dirty little secret is that most people are too nervous or socially awkward to open conversations with new people. We over-complicate matters for ourselves, unintentionally, and it leads to people standing around and/or just talking to the ones they came with, with little in the way of interaction between new people. This feature is not unique to bars or clubs.

The ironic thing? There are little hooks everyone COULD be using to open conversations with people around them. Basic observations on things happening all around you, the looks on someone's face, what they're doing, etc..... It doesn't even need to be special or amazing, it just needs to be in the current moment. Some examples:

Someone just missed a shot at pool.
Someone is hungrily eating bar food.
Someone is laughing contagiously.
Someone comments that they're happy it's Friday, etc.

Basic shit is happening all the time and simply calling out what you see happening, can lead to conversations. It doesn't take much; in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. FEW PEOPLE take advantage of basic openings like these.

I talked to some pretty hot girls, but the conversations didn't last long because their cockblocking friend(s) would pull them away or some talked to me like they were a celebrity or something.

If you want something more specific about what you can do to change these results, you need to lay out at least one or two of these scenarios, in AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE.

Without that information, all I can really say for sure, is that you made a mistake if cockblocking friends got in the way. Think this through, if the girls wanted to talk to you, they would wave their friends off, bring you into the circle of their friends and introduce you around, or otherwise find a way around the block.

If they let their friends "block" it's because something went wrong before that and they didn't actually want to be talking with you.

Women have a different experience as they grow up and come into puberty and beyond:

They deal with creepy dudes from the moment they gain any sorts of tits and ass. They often deal with some creepy shit from dudes 10 years older than them, or more.
A lot of frustrated dudes have some really negative ways of dealing with rejection, that fuck it up for everyone. It only takes ONE bad experience to scare them: once bitten, twice shy. It's ridiculously common for women to deal with dudes who see nothing wrong with following a girl for blocks after she has directly turned them down, all while voicing sexually aggressive things, in defiance of her direct rejection. I know this isn't you, but it's part of their experience, not ours.
As such, they adapt a lot of ways of defusing and avoiding such awkward and potentially harmful experiences with men.
- Girls will pull a girl away from a dude she doesn't want to talk to, protecting her from facing the potential blowback she might face from having to directly reject him herself.
- Girls often give guys numbers during a cold approach, just to make them go away and leave things cordially.
- And so on.
These things have nothing to do with "ego." It's a natural adaptation to some dysfunctional behavior on the part of a few guys who are fucking it up for the rest of us.

It varies by city and bar scene but trust me there is a fairly large variety. Yeah some elements you described are common and you'll always have to deal with (guys standing around trying to look hard, girls constantly getting pulled away like it's a rape in progress), but I think college bars are in particular hard for meeting new people. Everyone is hyper socially conscious and (if you live in most of the US) very concerned with Greek life and that whole heirarchy. I've had some good nights in this scene but overall they seem more closed off to outsiders than most bars if you aren't Greek.

This can be a different story if it's a bar a decent distance away from the college that a lot of college kids happen to go to - then at least the Greek influence is a little dialed down and they're somewhat more open to being seen with outsiders.

Every city is different though. I personally enjoy nightlife in the city where the nightlife is very central (ie downtown) with high volume and a good distance from any particular college. This makes it a much more conducive scene for getting to know randos

The clientele of the bar determines the atmosphere of the bar....or at least it did the last time I went bar-hopping (10 to 15 years ago). A sports bar will be different than a college bar, which will be different than a singles bar, which will be different from a biker bar, or tiki bar, or whatever. If you're there for pussy, find a singles bar with a rep for easy sex. Find out when it runs 'last call', and get in the door about an hour and half prior. That will give you half hour to settle in, get a little loose, move into the 'hunter' mindset, and look over what is on offer. The last hour before a singles bar shuts down sends most of the uppity bitches into desperation mode, and they get a whole lot less finicky....the closer to closing time, the easier to bag one. Tiki bars are fun as hell, but you likely will not get laid. Stay out of biker bars unless you like brawls, and sports bars unless you like sports....and maybe a brawl. Same for honkytonk bars. College bars are safe, but a total waste of time, unless you're a PUA. College kiddies are mostly poseurs of various sorts....all talk and zero action. Experts at pretense and cockteasing; failures at closing the deal.
