If your buddy wasn't dating Girl A, and if he hadn't told you he wasn interested in dating Girl A, then you didn't steal her away. If you knew he wanted to date Girl A, then your move leans towards dismissive, and I can see how your buddy is upset. And you're correct to steer clear of Girl B for now.
