Would you say it’s bad if I smoke pot a lot, to take my mind off of things?

I smoke weed for 24 years now (started at 18) , sometimes with longer breaks, but then also for some periods daily. I'd say I turned out pretty well, but I also have a friend, my age who I know for as long as I smoke, and he's unfortunately a text book loser,dealing with gambling addiction, smoking a lot of weed and doesn't get anything done. He always says "I need weed to be able to sleep" which is a big indicator for a problem.

So, if you are honest with yourself and say "I need weed to cope with whatever" you have a problem that should be addressed, since it will fuck up your life. If you're like me and simply enjoy the high, while getting things done, and being able to just not smoke for months since you don't need it, you don't have to be worried.

The problem is that you are using to offset something negative in your life. You shouldn't be taking your mind off your struggles, you should be putting your mind ON your struggles and trying to mitigate their negativity. Does the drug solve the problem? No? Then do something else.

If you were smoking weed casually in a social setting and can keep your head together then it wouldn't be a problem, but I am imagining that you get shot down and go into a cave to comfort yourself. Find a better outlet, brother, there are other choices.
