Lots of old engineers going to retire in the next ~10 years. Best degree you can get IMO. Currently going for MET/ materials science if that adds any credit to my comment.

I'm a network engineer, Wireless architecture more specifically. I like it. The challenge is to keep current. Especially in the wireless field, you design the RF environment the best you can with the knowledge you have of the physical environment, the requirements of the client be it simple data grade coverage, or voice and location with advanced analytics and wifi GPS.

It's a lot of fun actually. Even the site surveys can be fun if you enjoy walking around a lot. Seeing an RF environment come together is really cool.

It's like any job. You have to find the right place where you fit in. You can love a field and be unfulfilled just because the shop you are in sucks. Move to a different shop and it's your dream job. So the piece of paper and knowledge is great, but the part they don't teach you is how to suss out an employer and find the really good ones.

I think engineering is fucking sweet. I'm in the heavy equipment maintenance and repair arena and its fun. The paycheck is fulfilling. The thing you have to get used to is the anxiety that comes from problems that seem unsolvable and its your job to solve them. That's what you get payed the big bucks for.

It's called "work" and not "fun" for a reason. It's a means to an end (financial security).
