I went to Osheaga last weekend, which was a fantastic time. Of course, it's also a great way to open, like, a ton of times. Everyone is there to have fun, you have a ton of common topics (this dust is horrible, what are you going to see / have seen, that person did whatever stupid thing that's funny), and you're surrounded by so many people.

I spent some time in between acts picking out random people and just giving them a compliment, their outfit, their hair, whatever. That was fun, got a lot of smiles, because that kind of thing always makes people happy, and the barrier to doing it is way lower because of the environment.

The second night, I stumbled in a dumb way, and this woman asked me if I was ok. I joked it off, told her that my feet hurt like hell (they did, I was sober as a priest), and we introduced ourselves (Cool Name 1, which I complimented her on, because it was a little unique). Her friend came along like a minute later, and joined the conversation, and that's how I met Cool Name 2 (also a little more rare of a name). We had a bit of a chat about music, what we were excited about for the third day, made a few jokes, then they got swept away by a friend who told them they were heading out. About 15 seconds after we parted, my brain caught up and I realized I should have exchanged some contact info, but, c'est la vie.

Roll around to the third day, I'm at the last act of the day I had said I was planning to be at, hoping they'd show up (they said they were going to catch part of something else, then this one), and just generally dancing my ass off and having a fun time. LO AND BEHOLD, they show up, I tap Cool Name 2 on the shoulder, she turns and spots me, much joy is expressed, she grabs Cool Name 1, more joy, hugs, etc. A comment is made about how they'd been talking about me all day. Generally good mood, things are looking positive.

And thus, I make my mistake, if there was any mistake I made that night, this was the one. I DEFINITELY did not match their energy. I was having a fun time (still sober, because I don't generally partake), but still dancing my ass off. I dance, hard (we're at a high-energy act), because I'm there to have fun. I make comments with them, share a laugh or two, but I'm still way high energy. By the end of the set, I can tell they've both kind of pulled away, and by the time I get around to asking if they wanted to keep in touch, that "excited to see me" mood has turned to more of a "excited to not see me" kind of thing.

Now, thinking about it after, breaking it down, they had mentioned at least one of them was rolling, so maybe it wasn't me, maybe it was more of them coming down. However, if I had to do that same thing again, the simple lesson I'd put into practice would be to tone it down a little and match their energy level.

All in all, I had a fun time, which was what I was there for, but that was a definite loss I think I can chalk up this round.

tl;dr: I was too high energy, didn't match the women at their level, turned a definite maybe to a for sure no.
