I get it. We all do. We were all there at one point. It's scary and intimidating. Maybe that person you're about to approach will say no. Maybe you'll harass yourself.
Maybe you're not as good as you think you are.
Let me tell you something.
You have a super power.
That's right. A super power that will help you overcome Approach Anxiety, your fears, everything.
Wanna hear it?
You are a human being. What, you think that doesnt sound like much? Let me you what that means: it means that if you are alive and reading this, you are the result of a chain that goes back ten thousand plus years. You are the end product of millions of years of evolution. You are here because every one of your ancestors found a way to reproduce and survive and so can you.
You are incredible. You are designed for efficiency, for feats of strength, for creation and wonder. Everything you are when you look in the mirror is the design of desireable traits over thousands of generations of reproduction.
You have no claws. No sharp fangs. Nothing on you is designed to harm. Yet WE are a species that hunt everything, from prey to predator, from wolves to bears to lions. We are so good, we fear wiping entire species and eco systems from the planet. We have subdued beasts of the wild to be our creatures of burden, our companions, our food.
We have braved deserts and forests and tundra to be where we are today. We have pierced the firmament of the heavens and plunged the depths of the sea. We have explored the corners of the map and faced uncertainty and danger because courage is in the hearts of our species and curiosity in our blood.
We had nothing. The apes that we came from had sticks, and stones and bone. Now we rip iron from the womb of the earth and grind mountains to dust to build our towers and cities. Every generation that came before you laid the bricks of the foundation between them and YOU.
It doesnt matter who your ancestors were. If they were soldiers, they were apparently good enough to survive. If they were farmers, they were good enough to survive. If they were craftsmen, they were good enough to survive. Long enough for you to be here. And that means you are good enough. Good enough to forge another link in the chain that is humanity.
They had nothing but what they were and what the generation before them gave them in knowledge and means.
You have the access of our species at the push of a button. You can learn diet, and psychology, and physiology, and weight lifting. You can learn how to cook, how to create, how to garden, how to grow, how to build, how to change, how to fix how to ANYTHING.
People have risen from nothing to leave their mark on the world, for good or ill. There have been kings and conquerors, explorers and architects, writers and scientists...
Fuck it, Steven Hawking was a goddamn cripple. HE became an incredible scientist and have a family. What's your excuse?
Our ancestors were in caves, huddled together fearful because of the dark outside.
And you're afraid to approach someone you think is cute? With a flick of a switch, you banish the fear that took our species generations to overcome.
You have all the potential of a human being, because you are one.
If your ancestors could see you now, what you are capable of, what you know, what you understand, what you have at your disposal, they would think you were a GOD.
The power to change the world around you, to take what you want, to be who you want to be, is fully within your potential. You are a human being. Which means you were made to survive any adversity, any challenge, and overcome it.
So the next time you feel AA, the next time you feel fear, or worry, or doubt, remember what you are. And what you can do.
And then make it happen.
Because you are a human being. And THAT makes you amazing.
