It's "being friendly" in a fun and light hearted way.

The sexual nature only arises incidentally from the fact that you may be attracted to each other. It may not arise at all, at the time you are flirting.

Flirting is an instinctual way for people to assess each other's character ... whether they are relaxed, easygoing, gentle, non-obsessive, have a normal sense of humor, easy going, socially adjusted, and so on.

In a so called "pickup approach" the guy tries to compress all the flirting, vibing (finding common emotional touchpoints), logistics exchange and sexual tension into a single, five-minute interaction.

In normal life (social game) all these are spread out over days, weeks or months and sometimes they are all taken separately.

On a date you would tackle them all in turn, usually over a few hours.

Flirting imo is expression of your interest, then they express it back. It can be verbal or nonverbal. I'd also like to point out men are more verbal while women are more nonverbal
