Making jokes, or teasing adds value to interactions. Sharing stories of things you have experienced adds value. Story telling is great because it takes lots of pressure of others to contribute to the conversation. Also, if your bored of the topic, then change it to something completely unrelated.

Give up on the idea of self-preservation. Let your ego die, and give up on thinking about yourself. Think less about, "how can I be comfortable, how can I appear cool, how can I attract people?" Think more about stuff like "I'm going to fist bump that guy because it would be cool if someone fist bumped me. I'm going to smile and say hi to that chick because it will make her feel good. This situation I am in reminds me of a past experience, I am going to share my story." Give up on self-preservation.

Accept that these things make you feel uncomfortable, and do them anyway. People WILL judge you, and it doesn't matter. You WILL get embarrassed, and no one will remember. If you approach conversation to love others, rather than to preserve yourself, it will do wonders. Self-preservation is the center of self-consciousness. Give up the idea of self, and there is nothing you need to protect. If you don't need to protect yourself, then you can commit yourself to the social situation.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
