Right...

So, a friend's car almost got totalled today. We were on a small but busy-ish road and my friend pulls up because he desperately wants to take a piss. I go the back of the car to get something from my bag and I notice the car stumbling ahead, since it was a slight slope and my friend hadn't put the handbrake up properly.

I open the door, jump out and try to stop the car from swerving off road as one car avoids us. But there are more cars coming from behind and while I slow it down a bit, the steering swerves left onto the road, and I bail. I stand agape for 2 seconds and see my friend running towards the car to stop it and that's when it clicks to me to do the same and we manage to avoid the car hitting a couple of other vehicles coming from the back.

My first reaction in all this was to fight at first, since I did try stopping the car from swerving. I then chose flight once I felt the situation was FUBAR. It took a moment to recollect myself once I was safe to actually stop the car from getting onto the road and only because I saw my mate running.

I feel a bit guilty about my brain freezing. My query really is, people facing fight or flight situations, how did you retain your composure while things happened, because things could have gone much worse today. Its a new weakness in my mind I found out today, and I want to rectify it.
