I'm generally against coworker dating/hooking up.

Ask what his plans are for the weekend, if its something for a group setting or public, such as hiking, bowling, dog park, golf etc. Mention that you've never been/haven't tried in a while and would love the opportunity to go/try said event. He might invite you, of he doesn't, ask if you can't join if he accepts/invites, tell him when you arrive to the event your intent and leave the ball in his court
