My policy when I'm on dates is to take turns buying rounds, or split the bill at the end of the night - most girls I go out with seem keen on this. I imagine they don't want to feel like they owe me anything! Recently I've had a slightly awkward situation where I had to prompt a girl to cough up.

I'm in the UK btw - have a feeling the cultural norms may be different in the US/elsewhere.
