What to say on the cold approach?

I dated a girl for a while I absolutely loved, sadly, she was only here for some months but we made the best of it. But it al started with 'Hey, this may be a bit random, but you look really (Cute, interesting, etc) so I wanted to say hi (or another variation)' and just roll from there. Ask her what her story is, how did she get here, is she enjoying the evening and what is she planning to do. That's how I go about it. Just be open and a bit vulnerable

Pre-lockdown, I would approach direct, and - unless I had something specific to say - I'd go with the following: "excuse me, this will be very forward, but I just saw you and I think you look quite pretty, so I want to meet you". After that I would extend my hand for a handshake and introduce myself. Then I might comment on what made me notice the girl at first, for example, her hair, or whatever else it was. After that, I'd do what's called a "cold read" - instead of asking the girl "interview questions" (like "what do you do, how old are you", etc.), I'd make observations about her and try to make guesses. Keep it light and playful.

As Paul Janka once wrote: "Whatever you’ve heard about not paying compliments to women is bullshit. Women like flattery, they like flirting and sexual tone and many of them appreciate a direct approach".

I found that a message like "you look sexy, so I want to meet you" will get a better reaction - and you will see more respect in the woman's eyes for having the balls to say that, even if she's not interested in you - than something like "you look interesting, so I wanted to see who is this person". A thing I said during the initial approach to one girl who I ended up seeing for a while was: "you look like you could be an accountant... but a naughty accountant". Another girl, who I'm still seeing regularly, was wearing a trench coat when I first approached her, and I playfully commented that it makes her look like an exhibitionist. You can make conversations sexual and it works great.

What's left is to "close" - to seal the deal, get the girl's number or whatever. Close strong. Close direct. Don't close with a fake excuse, like "I just want to meet new people". I used to pull my phone out and say, for example: "you're pretty, I'm pretty, how about we go for a drink one evening, just stare at each other and see what happens?" - or simply "would you like to go out for a drink with me one evening?". I find that coffee dates only "work" in some situations - but going for drinks at a sexy lounge after dark is always the right move, and it sends a clear message.

There's more I could write on the topic, but the bottom line is: we are all different men with different personalities, so different things will be congruent with our personalities and, therefore, different things will work for us. That's why I would normally suggest you go out, try it out yourself, check how far you can go with this, and figure out what works for you and what doesn't.
