Victim mentality is dangerous mainly because you stop taking responsibility for your life and focus too much on external things that are affecting you.

On the dating scene you can see this in guys who blame their circumstances, their genetics or anything as the reason they can't get into a relationship. A bigger level of victim mentality can lead you towards depression because you actually believe that you are not in control of your life and that there is nothing that you can do about it. You lose hope.

The worst cases of victim mentality is when it turns into hate. I can't remember when this happened but there was this kid who made the news for going on a killing spree, he taped a video before saying how he wanted to kill all the hot girls for not sleeping with him or something along those lines. To me that's victim mentality taken to the extreme. Something as basic as taking ownership of your life is really important

Victim mentality is dangerous mainly because you stop taking responsibility for your life and focus too much on external things that are affecting you.

In that case I've had this to a "significant degree" for well over 10 years. I think it's done so much damage, that the inaction and lack of responsibility added up and now I'm permanently screwed; will probably be virgin for life. I'm late 30s now dude, hate to say it, but I ain't gonna lie.

To me that's victim mentality taken to the extreme. Something as basic as taking ownership of your life is really important

Do you mean, like, the new "Joker" movie? Along those lines? Just curious as to what you meant

I mean more like this story, about a kid who was so upset that girls didn't like him and blamed it all on them that it took him to an extreme where he ended up killing people. Granted, these are really extreme cases but if you're not mentally in a good place then remaining in victim mode can lead you somewhere dark.

BTW I'm also 30, you can turn your life around at any time, if you've been trapped in victim mode for so long then I'd highly recommend therapy or at least reading a book on the subject (My recommendation: No More Mr. Nice Guy). Go and proactively find stories and biographies of people who achieved things "late in life" to see that nothing is out of reach. Generally, surround yourself with positive things that counteract victim mentality. It might sound a bit ridiculous but if being a victim is all you've known then you have to take extreme measures to step out GL and stay strong

Yes, I knew you were going to link to that infamous story.

Maybe this is a tangent, but every time this is brought up, I like to say: "But what could he have done better, to find women?" The guy was half of an ethnic minority, he was 5'3" in height, he had Asperger's and therefore awkward, he lived in a place that ran on social status and materialism. His own "family status"--often mentioned by folks here as proof "that he actually did have status"--is not going to matter if you're socially-deficient and/or unable to participate meaningfully.

I like to wonder, what could he have done better? A lack of bitterness is always a good thing, but I dunno, is that enough on its own?

Go and proactively find stories and biographies of people who achieved things "late in life" to see that nothing is out of reach. Generally, surround yourself with positive things that counteract victim mentality.
