For me it is a way to communicate emotions with the text.

You hit the nail right on the head there.

You should use them. Its very important for communicating emotions.

The words we use make up only about 7% of communication.

Working with only 7% of what you can work with is like fighting a war with only a knife when you also have a rifle, side arms and a bunch of grenades on you.

Of course the only real way to maximize communication is to be talking to each other in person so she sees all your facial expressions and mannerisms but you should at least make the most of what you have to work with over messaging.

I even use gifs or send pictures & short videos of myself. Whatever you can do to communicate in a more complete way you should do.

I use them sparingly for girls i already know, have a number or have been out with. I use them often (and randomly/funnily) in the first few messages in OLD as it seems to get some attention.

Dont use it too much. I think 1 emoticon every 2 texts is a bit much. An advantage of lowering the amount of emoticons you use is that you think better about your tekst. You want her to feel an emotion and without the emoticon you have to do your best to make her feel the emotion just by reading the words you have written.

I use them as rarely as possible, and I write as little as possible. I prefer to phone and meet in person. Limit writing to an absolute minimum. These funny smilies quickly appear childish and immature. You'll be able to use them when you're 15, 20, whatever, but not so much when you're 30 or 40.

In general no, it is somewhat feminine or childish. You can use them if you text some bold or strong statement that needs an emoji to "soften" it up so it doesn't look cold or rude. Never text a joke followed by :D . Looks so stupid, like you are laughing at your own joke.

Dont overuse them . If you use other apps and allows gif you can also use that. I use that alot and works very good
