I would assume if I had aasked a girl out and she basically said no and hadn’t reciprocated like the flirting with the touching that she wasn’t interested in me and that would warrant a left swipe.

Jesus... I'm just going to give it to you point blank. Everything you've done and said (or didn't say) to him tells him that you aren't interested. You may have your reasons and etc, but the end result is him assuming you don't like him.
If you really want to try something with him, simply be direct. You've squandered time and confused him, so you're best approach is to simply talk to him and tell him what you think, because as it stands he has no idea what's up with you.

Desperate and pathetic that you like someone? There's nothing pathetic with telling someone that you'd like to go out with them because you're interested.
You're thinking too deeply into it. Simply go and ask and you'll receive your answer. If he say's yes, then cool. If it's a no, then just be chill and say, "Alright, no probs," and continue on as if there wasn't an issue.
