My biological father is what you would call a highly functioning autistic, he lives in his own world of perfectly aligned everything and organizes his markers on the basis of their position on the visible light spectrum (wish I was making this up). This man, two decades ago, was one of the brightest minds in his field, having published over 30 papers by age 25. My parents met at grad school and a few years later I showed up, eventually they had another kid and got married. This is where shit starts going south for my old man. His promising career turned monotonous, my parents got divorced, albeit in a very civil and decently fair manner, and this nigga burned the fuck out. Now he's a grade A complainer, whether it's my sister emptying his wallet, my mom nagging him to fix her irresponsible mistakes or my grandmother hounding him on Skype from halfway across the world there's always something he's gotta whine about. Whenever I think about him it eats me up inside, we're alike in so many ways yet i completely despise his behaviors. He's scared to put his foot down, any menial decision takes days if not weeks of deliberation and he bends over backwards to make everyone else content, even though he knows they completely take him for granted? How do I help him? More importantly how do I avoid becoming him? Tl;Dr dad is the epitome of a beta and I'm very anxious that I'll turn out like him in my middle age
