A wise man once said:

"A smart person will know a little about a lot of things and a lot about one thing.

I've used this to be able to talk about a lot of subjects with both male and female. Being well read is key to making small talk. If she/he mentions something you don't know about, this is your opportunity to learn about something new and continuing the small talk. Ask them to explain it to you and as they do keep looking at them without staring. Blink your eyes but maintain looking at them. I know women like it when a guy is looking them in the eye while they talk. If your both naked in bed facing each other maintain the eye contact. Don't look away from them.

I’m bad at it aswell but I find pointing out the obvious can work. Things like: 1. Playfully make fun of her if you notice something wrong. (did this tonight with my buddy and he landed a waitress’ number because she messed up our orders but we joked around about it) 2. Point out the awkwardness. If you catch yourself being silent and she’s not saying anything either point it out. Not in a rude way but a playful and friendly way. Maybe even go as far as making fun of yourself like saying “yeah I’m ass at small talk so... (follow up question)” don’t use self depreciating humor often though 3. Practice talking in a group. It’s a lot easier for me to small talk when I’m with my bud like I was tonight because he can things of things that I can’t and vice versa. 4. Act actually interested. Ask real questions and follow up so you’re on the same page. Follow up with something that you think is actually interesting about her (or just get good at pretending)

Maybe not great advice, but this helps me break the ice and makes small talk more fun (I HATE normal small talk). If I want to talk to someone, and have NO IDEA what to talk about (nothing they're wearing is conversation-worthy, nothing interesting is happening around us, I don't feel comfortable asking personal life questions) , I'll purposefully talk about something ridiculous. Whether that's asking them what their starter pokemon would be, which bartender would win in a fist fight, or whether they would pick pasta or smoothies to eat for the rest of their life, and why, I try to get them talking and sharing their thoughts and opinions about thus dumb subject (bonus points if you start off with "this is a really important question, so please give me an honest answer"). It usually takes the person off guard, and let's you have a light-hearted conversation that hopefully teaches you more about them. For me, it tells me a lot about someone if they're willing to play along with this type of conversation. And if they're not, they're probably not that interested in having a conversation in the first place (or they're just boring). This has helped me meeting new people at school, work, social gathering, wherever. And it takes a ton of pressure off the small talk.

What you are experiencing has a lot to do with your own lack of confidence and insecurities. If you are a confident person, you don't give a shit about what the woman thinks- therefore you don't have to "think" about what you are going to say, you just say whatever you want.

Go to a different setting perhaps. Volunteer events, yoga, boxing class, anything you might enjoy.

Only having common interests can help you. Or if you are an extrovert but I suppose you wont be there if that wass the case

my go to is asking where they are from or where the work, study etc.

Easiest way if found to remedy this is just ask her questions about herself. People love talking about themselves and this is also a good gauge to how things are going. A long response means she is engaged and into you, a short response means mixed feelings.
