I was looking at this post earlier today, that talks about this article from the Pew Research Center.

Many users already criticized this data as probably biased in that post.

But I discovered that even the way the data is shown in the Pew article is biased. The data for marriages is broken into:

  • Wife sole earner

  • Wife primary earner

  • Egalitarian

  • Husband primary earner

  • Husband sole earner

The charts on the Pew article seem to show that men are almost always working less, but if you combine all the data, on average married men work 48.5 hours (vs 45.2 for women), and married men have 26.5 hours of leisure (vs 24.8 for women).

Here is my calculation

Is it possible that the data was divided this way on purpose? The fact that the article never mentions that men work more hours on average leads me to believe that.
