Nothing works if there is no way to communicate. A translator might be a good idea for ordering a drink/food, but not for telling jokes.

This post reminds me of a time I was in France with a mate. We were sat on a terrace bar with a group of beautiful French ladies giving us the eyes. When the waiter came over to take another order of drinks I asked: any good ways of picking up French ladies? To which he replied: yes, speak French.
