I remember when i first joined reddit there was a huge drama in r/yurimemes related to this exact topic, with a lot of people there advocating that men should straight up get banned from the sub.

I never really understood this argument: following their logic, are single people forbidden from watching romance? or since i'm white i can't enjoy a love story between two people of colour? trying to gatekeep any genre of entertainment is really dumb as it's made explicitly to be consumed by people who are entertained by it.

I was also particularly shocked because i never had similar experiences in any other yuri related spaces (to be fair, i never used twitter or tumblr which definetly helped), my experience with the community has always been chill and enjoyable, the only similar reaction to this one i've noticed was the attack to creepy and fetishisty dudes who deserved it.

I will stop watching yuri when heterosexual women stop watching yaoi and fetishizing toxic and abusive relationships. However, it is well known that it is thanks to the support of men as a demographic group that yuri exists, and if it weren't for that, then there would be even less yuri anime and manga compared to yaoi.
