I live in an EU country and like all civilised countries we have laws that should apply to everyone. Our elected legislators enact laws and the police are obliged to follow those laws.

Our laws state that beachwear cannot be worn on the streets. It should be only worn while one is at the beach. For example men are required to wear shirts / tops when they are outside and not on a beach. Even though our climate is very hot (today it was 40C) almost all men obey this rule and you almost never see a man from my country walking about without a shirt. However tourists do not know about our laws and only yesterday a female member of parliament complained that the police had not taken action when: " two “fit” young men outside parliament were only wearing very short shorts."

It is also illegal for women to be topless on the beach or any public place. But our beaches are full of topless women (tourists) and the police do nothing. Last weekend I was at a beach with my 5 year old son. Two foreign women spread their towels next to us and took off their bikini tops. It was very hard not to look and my son kept staring. I kept thinking that if he said anything to his mother about us being 'with' two topless women she might try to get me into trouble for letting him be 'defiled'.

We've got a police number for reporting non urgent crimes - 119. I called it and a policewoman answered. I told her that I was with my very young son and two women were breaking the law next to us. She must have thought that I was joking or else she thought that she'd make fun of me because she made some very stupid comments about it being very hot but I asked for her badge number and reminded her that laws were being broken. No police came to arrest the criminals who were defiling my son. Imagine if it had been a man taking off his shorts!
