This sounds genuinely like she's insecure which isn't a bad thing in itself but this is to the point of actively sabotaging someone else's (someone she loves in fact) self-improvement to calm your jealousy down. What's to say this behavior won't spread to how she treats her son, what's to say she won't end up one of those toxic helicopter mothers who go ballistic when he eventually grows up to get a girlfriend?

Idk about you but as a girl with really intense mood swings myself due to unmanaged autism and heavy depressive episodes due to extreme trauma, who also gets a lot of male attention, and if my man started working out and got female attention as a byproduct of that, I'd feel proud of him. I'd feel proud to be the only one he loves.

And it's not like this is a girlfriend-boyfriend situation, this is a dad and his WIFE with a son he loves and cares for. The assumption he's "painting himself as a good father to hide the fact he's working out to leave her for another" is peak insanity and mirrors the same behaviors toxic men have when their tomboy girlfriends have male friends because "she's trying to fuck all of them behind my back". Innocent until proven guilty.

I'm not saying this woman is beyond help and he should "leave her immediately", but he shouldn't enable this behavior due to understanding it's most likely PPD. "Spare the rod, spoil the child" may be an abusive phrase to say but if we think of the "rod" as simply criticism and desire for her to do better as a person, the phrase has some merit in this situation. Spare the criticism, you enable more toxic behaviors and you know your son's not gonna like it.

Empathy is not excusing, it is knowing the root of the problem to pave the path for healing and fixing.
