Otherwise don't take it personally. People use compliments to manipulate. It's just the flip side of trying to get you to think there's something wrong with you.

Better to notice good or bad things for yourself than have someone else tell you.

The compliments I hear all the time from girls to guys is.

"You look like (some famous person)."

I always respond with, "is that supposed to be a compliment?" Or "He's good looking right?"

Compliment them on their compliment. If they give a generic compliment, say "It's nice of you to think so." For a unique compliment, say "wow, nobody's ever said that about me before!"

For more ideas, give the next French person you meet a sincere compliment, then see what they do. The French are masters at compliment-complimenting.
