First, stop listening to women about dating women.

Second, are you hot? Do you work out, lifting heavy shit to exhaustion 5-6 days a week? Does your body look awesome? How about your face, your haircut, your clothing? You groom and dress well, smell good, and carry yourself like a badass? If so, a girl sending you a bunch of smilies means it's probably on. However, your friend's right that you need to enter having no expectations, and in many cases, a girl knows whether or not she's going to fuck you long before you ever ask her out.

Anyway, if you don't look awesome and work out, fix that.

Third, stop overthinking your interactions with women. This comes across as desperate and needy. Like you're the kind of guy who's not used to dealing with girls, you don't have many chances or opportunities, and you're awkward, inexperienced, and afraid of screwing things up. Nobody wants to date a loser that no other women want. A girl loses social cred if she dates a guy nobody else wants to date. You need to just do whatever the fuck you want, say whatever comes to mind, and stop worrying about what women think.

Fourth, get out of the habit of asking girls out on formal dates. Get into the habit of approaching girls all the time, wherever you are, and just talking and getting to know them. Add them to your social network. Then, when you're going to go do something, call or text one of them and don't ask -- tell -- tell them you're going to be at place X at time Y doing something cool that you were going to be doing anyway because you enjoy it. You need to have an awesome life that you love living, then invite some girl to be a part of that awesome life for one night. Your life should be sufficiently awesome that you really don't care if she shows up or not, because while you're there, doing something you enjoy anyway, you'll probably talk to and meet a few more girls. The worst thing you can possibly do is set up some kind of formal date where you buy a girl's meal and sit across the table from her while she asks you interview questions and you try not to blow it.

Fifth, learn that there are 3.5 billion women on earth. No single woman is unique or special. You should never utter the words "never felt this way about any girl before". There are always other women, who are better than the particular girl you're staring at in every single way. Getting hung up and over-invested on one woman is needy and desperate. Women subconsciously interpret this as you not having any options with any other woman, hence why you're going so heavy and so all-in with her. And like I said above, nobody wants to date a guy that no other women want.

Be physically fit, professionally successful, socially apt and well-connected, know interesting hobbies and useful skills. Be confident. Be fun. Quit fucking around asking the future love of your life out on formal dates and start fucking around with women.

this woman knows nothing of your dating life. she sees you in a certain way, but other women will see you differently (this is the bit she doesn't understand due to solipsism, and why you shouldn't listen to her even in the unlikely event she's being straight with you).

smilies aren't recommended (too playful)... but equally playful can work well for some people. they aren't a dealbreaker.
