The elevation and rebranding of Nazi propagandist, Leni Riefenstahl, was promoted by 1970s feminists eager to see a successful female filmmaker.

The connection was made by part time feminist Susan Sontag in her article on fascism and the aesthetic of control, “Fascinating Fascism” 1975

It was disputed by some but in the following decades Leni, has taken on an aura of feminist icon herself, a woman making it in the patriarchal society of Nazi Germany.

What they hid for decades is she counted Hitler as a close freind. He called her the ideal woman. She knew him well before he became chancellor and took over Germany

Triumph of the Will, her documentary, was bought and paid for by the Nazi party as we’re all her films.

Not that you need to hear it, but there is no male equivalent, who ranked so high in Nazi Germany and became an accepted cultural icon and celebrity years later.
