My rule of thumb is that love and hate are basically the same for women, since they just crave drama and attention, and if she cares enough about you to get emotional about you it doesn't actually matter what she's saying. Handle it like a shit-test. Agree and amplify or something alike.

If she is saying it in a playful tone, there is no problem at all either.

If you fucked her before, this also always an opportunity for sexual escalation in either case.

Whatever you do, just do not take it serious.

As mentioned, context, but usually just a shit test. I like to agree and amplify with something like "Only mean? I guess I need to try harder..." or something.

I've had that comment work for me both ways. It's slightly different than being called an asshole. I would say the main inference of being called mean is that the person really likes you. Being called asshole, they're just starting to like you and/or don't know it.
