Norah Vincent, Self Made Man.

As someone who's read it twice, cause you always pick up on shit the second time around, it's a very good book. She actually wrote the book after her stay at a mental institution but she faithfully kept to her journal of the entire event, even when it strongly contradicted her feminist ideals.

Basically she created a false persona, a fictional character named "Ned" that was a male. She then proceeded to dress and act that role for eighteen months while keeping a daily journal. During that time she interacted with men and women, as a man, and observed and compared the interactions. What she learned was that men had a shit ton of expectations placed on them while women had few. During this process the character "Ned" took on his own beliefs and feelings which were at odds with her central beliefs and feelings. It caused her mind to start to shatter because her central ego could no longer rationalize all the shit she's said and done in her life. She began to see her feminist self as the monster we know them to be. It got so bad she started fantasizing about punishing herself.

At the end she hamsters hard core, her final conclusion was basically "patriarchy hurts men too", but the book itself doesn't support that conclusion. It plainly lays out evidence for most core TRP principles. The need for male bonding based on mutual respect which is based on quality of character. The insatiable need for men to get pussy, and how women use this to manipulate us. How women don't want a women in a mans body as a sexual partner, they want strong stoic men who are unmoved by life events. And how much women will deceive themselves and others.

Gives a nice synopsis of what she saw and discovered. One of the best discussions starts at 11:10. 20/20 asks if she had any fun, and Nora replies (summarized by the interviewer? ) that the constant requirement to prove oneself to a woman was grueling.

My takeaway: Nora realized the idea that the perfect man is a woman in a man's body is fatally flawed.

There's a telegraph review of the book. I have to say, the chapter where she goes to a bar and tries to pick up women is hilarious. So is the one where she tries online dating. (Hilarious in the sense of: she thinks "I'm a woman, I know what women want - this is going to be so easy", with the expected results :).

It's an excellent book, I highly recommend reading the entire thing, she actually gets it right a lot of the time.
