A funeral I worked this afternoon. The guy was a recovered alcoholic who spent the last 20 years of his life loving everyone he met. The number and diversity of people in the room astounded me.

How did he show his love for these people? Was he a big donor to causes? A philanthropist to homeless people? Active in his church? a benevolent employer?

That's actually what surprised me the most. He worked for an organization that helped orphans or families in need. He wasn't rich or anything and he worked in the background with low pay. He was pretty active at the church, but not in any paid position. Everyone who was there was just someone who knew him. A lot of them were not from the church he attended. One guy got up to talk and said he met him when he was loading his work truck on a street at 5am. They've now been friends for 12 years. Everyone who spoke said the same thing "He loved and encouraged everyone he met." I didn't know the guy, but as someone who works a lot of funerals, this guy was really inspirational.

It's easy to get bogged down in the arguments and fighting injustices - and fighting injustice is important - but remember the importance of kindness.
