I'm reading 'To kill a mockingbird' in English for a book club in Madrid and I'm finding some interesting ideas, besides the racism topic.
The whole story is a false rape accusation story. A young girl states that a man raped her and an entire community, automatically, assumes she's right and he must be hung, even when there is no proof of it.
I think the image is pretty clear: she tries to have sex with an attractive 'nigger' and when he rejects her, she lies about being raped.
He's even the 'nice' guy to her before the incident: “Seemed like every time I passed by yonder she’d have some little somethin‘ for me to do—choppin’ kindlin‘, totin’ water for her. She watered them red flowers every day—. I was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and I knowed she didn’t have no nickels to spare”.
And that's how she pays him: trying to destroy his life in order to save her pride.
Human nature never changes...
