I need advice about a wedding issue from an old friend who is getting married.
A former good friend from high school is getting married and I really don’t feel like going but want to let him know in a way that is respectful.
Pretty much we were really good friends at one point in our lives (ages 16-20) and I was very close to him then, very much like family.
He started hanging out with people who I thought we’re idiots, and they affected his personality and he took on their mannerisms. He’d go out and party with these people and unfortunately he’s the type of person who becomes like the people who hang out with him, much more so than others.
So at that time we just started partying with other people and it’s all good - we’d go for like beers once a month and catch up.
He then started dating a girl who cheated on him and he kept rationalizing that it was okay because she was drunk when she was doing it. I was the only person he would confide in about these issues and he didn’t tell other people, which makes it really weird for me.
He would call me up and tell me his relationship issues and I was actually just shocked at what a pussy he was, it made me reexamine my life that I was hanging around someone who was such a pushover.
I couldn’t believe what a loser he was as he was self-rationalizing her infidelity. All told she cheated on him probably like 5-10 times, and when he met her she was living with another guy and fucked him outside of a dumpster so she literally has a history of infidelity and he was the “other guy” when he met her.
I know for a fact she also lied about being raped. She said she was taken advantage of when she cheated on him with an ex when in fact she was fucked outside of a fast food restaurant.
The reason why I give these details is that he’s kind of like the guy in that movie “I love you man”, like his top hobby if hes in a relationship is BEING in the relationship, so he kind of “is” his issues because its all he talks about and kind of becomes his identity.
I don’t care that she cheats as I honestly believe if you put up with stuff like that then you kinda deserve it, so I’m not trying to slut shame her but at the same time its tough to watch one of your former good friends get rekted at life.
Anyway we kept in touch and went for like monthly beers two years ago but then I moved and since then we only really go for beers like once a year. Every time I got for beers with the guy he’s that much more of a cuck and honestly its nice catching up but I’m a bit embarrassed for the guy and don’t really want to hang out with him at all but still respect him as he was.
Anyway so he proposed to this woman and honestly is getting married in like 2 months. About a month ago I told him what I thought of her and the previous things that happened and he said she’s sober now and he didn’t even remember the stuff.
I don’t really care to go but I want to be respectful and not shit on the guy.
Any thoughts on how I can communicate that I’m not going without being overly rude?
I don’t mind once a year beers with the guy to catch up but at the same time the whole thing is weird to me.
TL;DR A former good friend is the worlds biggest cuck. I don't want to go to the wedding but want to tell him in a way that is still respectful.
