Because you can live like a king for next to nothing. One of my old Sgts retired there. With his retirement he can get his dick polished by a new woman every night, has a very decent place to stay, enjoy the amazing weather and the food is amazing according to him. He started learning the language a few years before he retired and now he just comes back to the states a few times a year for logistical reasons.

the book, land of the loser, kinda hints on this. at least in the terms of culture and girls its completely different there. while billy beta cant get a girl in America for whatever reason, once he goes to asia/japan etc , hes now in the top 20% by default.

the people fall in love with that and culture and then lives there for good since hes a king and feels "appreciated" without actually improving themselves .

as for the book its a good read.
