I went through a similar thing with my ex. At 12 my daughter wanted to come live with me but told me her mom needed the child support. She shouldn't even know that. Even though I was paying support I bought 80% of her clothes and my ex continued to receive support during the summer months while my daughter was living with me. At 15, she finally came to live with me. I never asked for a dime of support from her mother, and in fact she kept a few months of support that I had to continue paying through the state until I could get it stopped.

My daughter worked full time and floundered in college until she matured a bit and settled on a STEM major. She was accepted into a program and let me know she needed $4000 for the next semester. I sent her mother a text to asked if she'd be sending her half directly to my daughter. I got crickets. I paid the bill.

If she shows up for my daughter's graduation next spring, I will probably lose my shit on her.

Someone broke down the numbers... it's cheaper for the kid to pay for their own college, opposed to their parents using some of their retirement. The interest gained in the meantime is the difference between an elderly parent taking care of themselves VS the kid covering expenses for an elderly parent.
