Tl:Dr at the end.

First of all, I understand my primary focus should be school and getting into a good colleges and that'll be my first priority. However I want to be respected as well.

We'll, I'm not actually poor, just poor in comparison. I go to a very exclusive, Ivy-League feeder school as a scholarship kid. There are two types of scholarship kids: those with a academic sholarships (PSAT, GPA, interviews) and kids who've been recruited for basketball or fencing, the two sports the school dominates in. The latter are usually very popular because they're athletes, but I'm the former.

I got in for 9th grade at the start of this year. I mostly hang out with other academic scholarship kids. Nobody has been mean, per se, and most people are pretty nice, but the social status is obvious: most kids dress in clothes I can't afford and have expensive hobbies that cost a lot: different kids I've met have liked stuff as diverse as sailing, skiing, flying, and car collecting.

I hang out with most other academic scholarship kids, but none of us have much status. I decided to try out for fencing and basketball, since all the players are popular. However, these kids are goddamn virtuosos at these sports, so I didn't get in.

I already lift and have a pretty good body, but in average looking. Some activities I want to join are debate, mock trial, newspaper, quiz bowl, and squash. Nobody cares or respects them, though.

Any advice on what clubs to join and how to get respect?

tl;Dr: I go to an exclusive private school and have no respect because I'm not rich. I'm friends with the other academic scholarship kids, but none of them are popular. I tried out for basketball and fencing, but didn't get in. I already lift. How do I get respect without money?
