In the past few years, I've become acutely aware of the way 99% of the women I walk past in public will not make eye contact with me or otherwise acknowledge my presence with a friendly smile, nod etc. More often than not, they have a thousand yard stare or even a scowl.

I'm NOT talking about flirtatious interactions at a bar or nightclub. I am so beta/married I gave up on that AGES ago. I am referring to the type of casual social exchange that DOES frequently occur between passing adult males...even strangers...that includes momentary eye contact, a quick nod or smile or an informal greeting. I think between men, particularly in the Southern US where I live, it is an act of mutual respect and signals "there is no threat here."

I am an average 40-something professional man who...and you'll just have to take my word for this...does nothing to present an implied or explicit threat to anyone. And no, I don't expect every person to acknowledge my presence as if I am somebody special.

Am I the only one who notices this phenomenon?
