What can the master's degree get you? Getting an MBA from one of the top 6-7 business schools can easily land you into a job paying 120-150k or more right out of the program whereas an MBA from the lowest tier is worthless. Getting a master's degree in computer science doesn't seem to mean anything as people are getting hired out of these two month boot camps. You'll get a job with just a bachelors so why are you wasting time on the masters? Getting a master's degree because you have an arts degree and can't find a job is just adding more to your outstanding student debt.

PhD not very useful except if you want to work in research. Could also be an advantage to work for the government, depending on your country.

My stance is that with internet, you can learn a lot online. This is great, especially if education is very expensive like in the US.

It's very important to get mentors, it helps tremendously especially when you are new to a field.

Also, experience is key, so learn by doing (get an internship, get a job, build something yourself). You need to put in the hours before getting good in anything.

I had my old work pay for my MBA (Northwestern) and a year after completion a had a new job at a new company that more than doubled my salary.

After taking the MBA I became convinced of two things;

1.) People with MBA's respect the degree based solely on the sheer amount if work that you have to produce while in pursuit. 2.) An MBA was nothing more than a paper validation of the skills and work ethic I already had.

For me it was a great move as I have continued to move companies, increasing my acumen, salary and future earning potential. I will note that I have continued to take classes to help strengthen my resume.

I'm working on my MBA right now. If work will pay for it, then do it. You've got nothing to lose.

I have one, which gives me access to certain jobs that would be unavailable without it, and it bumped my salary a bit.

Research shows (citation needed, can't be arsed) that people with masters earn more money than those with a PhD. Some of that can be due to people finishing PhDs are geeks who are more interested in their field than making money.

Student loans are shit, and I wish it would just go away.
