Must be congruent with your appearance, behavior, personality, and where you are going for the date. "Casual" means different things for different people. For example, "casual" for a 35 year old investment banker will be very different than a 16 year old high school kid.

As long as your getup and behavior don't appear fake and uptight, I'd say dress up. If you are wearing a tuxedo for coffee... make sure you can play the style well. Overdressing usually gets you the right kind of attention. Keep in mind that if she shows up in cutoffs and a tee, she's going to judge herself, which also isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Dress pants, open shirt (Not to the belly and no gold chains) with jacket. You can always lose the jacket, but you can't put one on if you don't have one!

Obviously if you're going bowling then that's not appropriate.

GQ has solid fashion choices, you can recreate your own style with much cheaper clothing than the overpriced bs they show in GQ.

I just do a simple shirt with some kind of denim at the bottom with casual boots (brown leather preferably). Go for a leaner fit and that's pretty much it

Essentially, casual wear means comfort. A casual date means that you should be able to rock your outfit effortlessly, with minimal complexity. The most important part is to avoid looking like you tried too hard. Ideally, if it's a serious relationship on any level, your woman should look slightly better than you.

For me, a casual date calls for a well-fitting T shirt in a dark, neutral tone, some colored khakis (I like green), a well worn pair of converse, and maybe a bracelet or a good target hoodie, because that's what allows my personality to shine through while still looking stylish.

Dressing up implies playing a role that isn't strictly you, and while it's fun sometimes, making it a regular thing makes you look like a try-hard.
