Is shaving a mistake?

Mate, if your ONLY reason for shaving is to look more trustworthy, dont. Do whatever you want. Do you want facial hair? If yes, stop shaving it. If no, keep shaving it. It doesnt make any difference.

There are a couple factors.

1) Does it even grow well on you? If you get sparse hairs randomly on your face and not a nice full shadow/beard then it's not for you.

2) Do you look like you can even pull it off? Facial hair is pretty alpha looking which is why I believe women love it so much. If you are a lanky looking nerd then it's going to look terrible on you and you'll just look dirty. Also, I don't understand that pretty boy chin strap shit but I'm sure younger girls like it. I just don't know any that do.

Personally I get compliments all the time on how my facial hair grows in. I stopped shaving every day originally because I just got lazy. I guess I just got lucky that it improved my looks more than hindered them. Also, I look 15 when I do shave and 22 when I don't (I'm 27).

It does look cleaner and it shows you take care of your appearance, but a neat, trimmed moustache would display the same traits. Just try not to look unkempt.

In my experience women are about 50/50, some absolutely love facial hair, and some find it unpleasant. So just go with whatever you think looks good and you'll attract those women who think alike. Bonus points if it gives you more confidence.

Personally I go for a thin layer of perma-stubble which I trim every few days. I think if you have a strong jaw being clean-shaven doesn't make you look less masculine, but unfortunately I have a baby face and I can't pull it off.

Shave if you want to. You're only being indoctrinated if you don't want to shave but keep doing it because you feel like you have to.

Have facial hair. Polarizing features actually work in your favor because while it will eliminate some women, the ones who are looking for it will be more attracted to you. You should be able to grow facial hair that isn't embarrassing obviously, and choose a facial hair style that works for your facial shape.

I'll answer this with an anecdote...

I'm not an attractive person by any means. My friend's wife once described me as a "3, maybe 4" (I was clean shaven)... I grew a beard, and let it get fairly long and manley. We met my friends wife one day, and she goes "ooh, you grew a beard!" My friend then prods her about it (he gives terrible advice, and thinks I should shave it all off). She goes "Yea.... you should... uhm... shave it... ", but the body language, the giggly schoolgirl look... Her words said one thing, but her eyes said exactly the opposite. Granted, it was too unkempt at the time, so it needed to weed whacked back, but still, I no longer shave it all off.

It doesn't matter. A hairy-faced guy who has 1% better game than you're clean-shaven pretty face will pull more ass than you. It's only a handicap if you think it's a handicap. Whatever you do, own it.

There is science on this subject. Optimal facial hair is ten day stubble.

Also, beards become more popular and inspire more confidence during times of hardship; people look more to visibly-masculine men for leadership when the economy is bad. Can't find the study for that one but it's out there.

I personally don't shave my face at all, but my personality and the way women treat me is exactly the same as it was when I did shave. I am an aggressive, arrogant bastard with or without the beard.

I have a beard because I felt like growing one, and also because I ride motorcycles regardless of the weather, so it keeps my face warm. It also gives me something to contemplatively stroke while I read shit like this on the internet.
